He and his wife Judy have five daughters, four sons-in-law, four grandsons, two granddaughters, and two dogs. They have lived in Highland Park, New Jersey since 1969.
Joe is the older person in the photograph. His grandson survived circumcision and will soon be a bar-mitzvah.
Joe has been involved in Jewish learning and teaching all of his life, is a founder and former chair of both the National Havurah Committee and its annual summer institute, and has been leading guided meditations on Jewish prayer for the past fifteen years. He is a founder of the Highland Park Minyan, still going strong after over 40 years.
It may not be apparent from the Siddur, but Joe is a professor of mathematics at Rutgers University. For the past twenty-five years he has focused his attention on K-12 mathematics education.
One of the reasons Joe created this Siddur was to try to answer his own questions about prayer. Perhaps the Siddur will help you answer some of your questions as well.
